DESCRIPTION

Why I chose this deck: I started off my trip into modern by playing Mono U Tron, which at the time was an okay deck. I then went up to Burn, and later moved onto infect. Burn and infect where obviously great decks. I just wanted something that felt explosive(Yes I realize infect is a very explosive deck, it just didn't suit my taste). So I found Grishoalbrand which is a fun combo that just felt right playing. If mastered it can be a very good deck. Goal of the deck: If you are new to modern, or are just unfamiliar with grishoalbrand. I will explain because at a glance this deck looks like a mess of cards. When in reality it is a machine, and all cards are key components to winning early. The goal of Grishoalbrand is to get Griselbrand into play. This can happen one of two ways. Getting Griselbrand into your graveyard with cards like Faithless Looting or Cathartic Reunion, or by using Through the Breach. Once he is in play. You can draw cards. This is where the Nourishing Shoal into Worldspine Wurm combo comes into play. By exiling Worldspine Wurm for no cost, you will then gain 11 life. Which then allows you to draw more cards off of Griselbrand. Eventually if everything goes to plan. You will have drawn your whole deck. Then the next step is to get Borborygmos Enraged into play. This can be done again by either using Through the Breach or Goryo's Vengeance depending where Borborygmos is. Turn 2 and 3 kills can be very common with this deck. Alternate Win Cons: If you are not getting lucky with your draws. You can always Through the Breach a Worldspine Wurm and swing in for 15, then get 3 5/5 tokens. If this is done on turn 2/3 it may not be an instant win, but it will be a huge problem for the opponent. If griselbrand gets removed, or pathed. You can still win without the combo. It may take longer, but clunky wins can come together with this deck. Why Not Grixis?: While adding blue does have some upsides, like Serum Visions, and Izzet Charm. When adding another color, it makes the deck feel more inconsistent. When just playing Red/Black, you have more cards that have the same effect, where if you were to add blue, you would have to remove some of those cards in substitute of say Serum Visions. It is easy to fix mana in modern with fetches and all, it's just that blue in the deck doesn't feel right for me. If it is your cup of tea, go right ahead and have fun! Splicing onto Arcane: This deck can get really crazy once you get a good understanding of how to splice your spells. It allows for ways to avoid counterspells, and force your opponents to play cards. For Example: I can exile a Worldspine Wurm with Nourishing Shoal, and before the card is off the stack, I can splice a Desperate Ritual onto Nourishing Shoal. Now i have 3 red mana, and still have my desperate ritual in hand. I can then cast Desperate Ritual out of my hand, and exile a Simian Spirit Guide to put me at 5 red man. To finish it off I Through the Breach a Borborygmos and throw my lands at the opponent. That is just one of many instances when Splice onto Arcane can help you get the mana you need, and close out the game. Hate Cards: While cards like Path to Exile can really put a damper on your party. Deaths Shadow aggro is really big currently, so fatal push is seeing a lot of play, and more fatal push means less paths to worry about. Also, with the recent banning of Gitaxian Probe, Infect has really fallen off, which was one the worst matchups for this deck. While hatecards can be annoying to fight with, they can be played around with splicing, and other things. It is just part of playing the deck. Like I said, you don't have to combo off to win. Sideboard: Pyroclasm - Good against affinity and other creature based decks Emrakul - Good as another win con, a turn two emrakul can be really devastating. Dodges Path to Exile Shattering Spree - Good against affinity and decks that sideboard in Relic of Progenitus Fulminator Mage - Good to disrupt Tron Fatal Push - For Death's Shadow Pact of Negation - Good against burn and blue decks. Read the bones - Boarded in against slow decks Boseiju - For counterspell decks Lightning Axe - A form of discard and removal, can get rid of Tarmogoyf. Blood Moon - Okay against tron, good against scapeshift. Collective Brutality - Good against combo decks, burn, and decks that run Path of Exile.
