Friday Night Magic 1st Place 10/19/01
Bag-O-Bean`s Collectibles, Port St. John, FL
by Matthew Ferrante

I was so happy when I came home last night :-) I had just won my first FNM at my local card shop and I thought you guys might want to hear about it. I arrived at the shop a little early yesterday to finish trading for the cards I needed for my deck. I played a variant of the U/G/R Tempo IBC deck.

We had a turn up of 8 players (including me) that night and at 7:00 the games began!

Round 1
Opponent: Sael Lugo
Deck: Counter-Trenches

I like playing Sael alot. He is a very skilled player, has a good attitude when playing, and does the best reactionary noises (I always screw with him about that :-)

I win the roll, and start the beats with a 2nd and 3rd turn Skyfolk. With no mountains in play, Sael continued to take the Skyfolk swings for awhile. A little later he tried to Fact or Fiction to find an answer which I Mystic Snaked. BAD MOVE! He draws a mountain and began rocking with a Lightning Angel while I`m tapped out. I eventually deal with the Angel with a Prophetic Bolt with Counter backup. Kicked Skizzik resolved and he started rocking with a Skyfolk, the other Skyfolk got Hobble`d a turn before, for the win.

I sideboard in 2 Confiscate and 2 Deflection for the second game. He goes first and decides to keep his mana open for the first few turns to try and counter stuff. That plan comes to a halt when a few mongeese hit play which he can`t counter :-) (Good mongeese, faithful mongeese :-) Mongeese die soon to a resolved Trenches and he starts busting out with the token creature`s. Soldier tokens + Lightning Angel + Prophetic Bolt = Death

The last game was one of the best games I have ever played of Magic. I had an early lead in the game but I kept killing myself with pain lands and he began to counter stuff..... For the first 15 turns I did not pull a single basic land aside from a few forest. We both accumulated our forces and countered more stuff. At one point he was at 4 and I was at 5. On his side he has the Trenches out with a few tokens with a Lightning Angel. He is also tapped out. I have 2 Skyfolk, and 2 Snakes, and a Reef and Coast untapped and a Fire/Ice in my hand. I planned to use the Ice portion to deal with the Angel when needed but I thought I would take a chance and attack with everything. He blocked everything but a lone Skyfolk which got through and brought him down to 2. I smiled and Fire`d him for the remaining damage. Phew! That was a real close game!

1-0
2-1

Round 2
Opponent: My pal Brent (aka Trent, aka Special K)
Deck: Domain

Brent is my hookup when I need cards for my decks. He buy`s like 2 boxes a week :-) He is also a good friend and helps me playtest decks.

I win the roll again! (I`m on a streak!) I go first and summon up some mongeese. I Snake everything else he plays aside from a lone Hippo which gets fried by a Prophetic Bolt when he has no mana to pump him. Snakes and Mongeese march in for the win.

I don`t sideboard anything in and go on to the 2nd game. He gets out a Sunscape Familiar which allows him to Evasive Action things for a singular U. Not a good thing, especially when I try to Counter a Global Ruin which really hurts me when it gets resolved. I come back though with basic land and start pumping out more creature`s. Then Treva resolves, Grrrr..... I deal with it though when he blocks a Skyfolk and I Bolt it :-) I get a second bolt through the impulse of the first. Next turn I send my creature`s in and Bolt for the kill.

2-0
4-1

Finals
Opponent: Erin
Deck: B/G/W Agro

This is his first time to the shop and is playing his friend Karl`s deck. He is really funny and I talked to him a bit before the tournament started. His deck has lots of big creature`s and I thought I was gonna get rocked..... Lets get to the match shall we.

I win the roll again :-) I go first and started off with some Skyfolk beats. He attempt to Vindicate the Skyfolk and I Snake it. I bust out with an unkicked Skizzik next turn and attack for 9. He did not like that one bit. He brings out a Blinding Angel which I tap continuously with Ice and my creature`s send me to Game 2.

I sideboard in 2 Deflection and 2 Confiscate (Which is pointless, I never got to use anything I sideboarded that night).

He goes first and is striken with no plains. I bust out with Blurred Mongoose (I eat Vindicate`s for breakfast) and Snake a few things. He gets some White mana out and bust out with not 1, not 2, but 3 Blinding Angels. I took some Angel beats for awhile until I pulled a Bolt which stopped one of them. He gets a Deed which resolves and busts it for 2 killing my Skyfolk and Mongeese (Sorry guys). I untap and draw..... THERE YOU ARE TAHNGARTH! Right when I needed you! I shoot down the Angel`s with ease. Get some flying buddies out and Fire/Ice him for the win.

6-1
3-0

Props:
Bag-O-Bean`s Colelctibles for providing us with all of our Magic needs.
My best friend Vanessa for giving me a ride to the shop :-)
Sael for giving me an excellent game.
Brent for lending me a Tahngarth before we started.
Erin for providing us with some good music.
And the rest of the players who came that night.

Slops: Sael for not bringing his TRADE STUFF! I got like half the deck he wants to build in MY binder and he can`t even remember to bring me a SINGLE CALL OF THE HERD! I need one more for a deck. GRR!!!!!

Matthew (Fizzle) Ferrante
Titusville, FL.
MJFerrante@cfl.rr.com
