the overpowering combination of cloudform, runemarks and sages reverie in a recent draft got me wondering whether a solid constructed hexproof deck might be possible utilising this combination. playing a sages reverie on a cloudformed creature to give a +2,+2 boost and draws 2 cards just felt so good! this deck is the result of that thought. testing has been positive but not overwhelming, but there seems to be something there. in a few promising test games, certainly in game 1s, ive found the deck exploits the general lack of non-targeted removal in the format in the top decks, specifically in abzan. some general notes about the deck construction: this deck plays a little differently to previous incarnations of hexproof decks. the lack of cheap hexproof creatures and auras in standard mean the deck plays a more gridy game aiming to build a the perfect creature that negates the opponents strategy over a number of turns, eventually taking over the game. as in any hexproof deck, the choice of auras makes the deck and the suite in this deck is specifically chosen to support the grindy aim - divine favour and aspect of gorgon provide large backsides making your hexproof creature a better blocker. the +3 life on the favour helps keep you in the game with swarm decks and the death touch on the gorgon holds up the large monster decks. hopeful eidolon and eternal thirst give lifelink to help you recover. abzan runemark provides more p t boost and vigilance allowing for a permanent blocker and letting you regain life when attacking without losing your blocker. aqueous form provides evasion, though its not always needed, and sages reverie pushes your monster over the top, plus refills your hand to help recover from a potential board wipe. outside of the auras, redundancy in the hexproof department is provided by bassara tower archer and xathrid slyblade. their abilities are not without use either. heliods pilgrim provides redundancy in the aura department, allowing you tutor for the perfect aura at the perfect time and meaning you dont need to overload on auras. it also provides a blocker in a pinch! the last interesting card choice is citadel siege. while i appreciate this card isnt an aura and so isnt tutorable, its utility as both board control to keep you in the game and continual buff on your hexproof creatures once youre stabilised is just too good to leave out. perhaps though, ymmv? regarding the sideboard, the cards are chosen to help you either stabilise (bile blight, eternal thirst, oracles insight) or fight potential hate in mass removal and enchantment removal (swan song, thoughtseize, valorous stance) out of your opponents sideboard. definitely room for improvement though. while you can probably see all sorts of issues with the deck. there are a few in particular that trouble me. firstly, the mana base is tough - gg on turn 2, uu on turn 3 and ww on turn 4 is really awkward particularly with no bant tri-land :( there are also commonly played cards that cause real issues, crackling doom and mass removal in general (end hostilities, crux of fate and ugin) are also nasty. being slower, the perfect curve from a large creature deck (abzan, temur) can be really tough to recover from). and having no straight up removal, which may be a mistake, an early goblin rabblemaster can also be insurrmountable. finally, back to nature is still a card last time i check. despite all the isseus, the deck has shown promise. i would love to know if its possible to solve its problems and make it a really competitive deck, or if it should just be consigned to being a nitip (neat idea, terrible in practice).
